The fantasy genre is one of the largest novel genres to date. It is versatile and eccentric, offering a multiverse of creativity and escape through its various sub-genres. One of these sub-genres is Afrocentric fantasy, which draws inspiration solely from African myths, legends, symbols, and folktales. It is a genre that revolves around themes rooted in Africa. As a South African, I’m ashamed to admit that I delved into Western fantasy before exploring African fantasy. This was mostly due to my exposure to heavily Westernized reading material. The literature I consumed at home consisted mainly of literary fiction and classical novels. However, that changed last year, all thanks to Tomi Adeyemi‘s Children of Blood and Bone trilogy. It expanded my horizons within the fantasy genre and sparked my excitement to explore fantasy with themes closer to home. Since then, I have delved into Afrocentric fantasies by other authors, discovering a new world that I’m delighted to have found. Here are some recommendations from my reading list that I would like to share with you. Check out these other recs to get more reads!
1. ‘Beasts of Prey’ by Ayana Grey (Trilogy)

7. ‘Children of Blood and Bone’ by Tomi Adeyemi (Trilogy)

There is a lot more fantasy novels out there that haven’t come up on my radar, but it’s always good to search for more because it’s a big world out there and I intend to explore it. Hopefully, you can explore it too and these books bring you closer to the joy of reading.
